Period Film: HBO Miniseries, Mildred Pierce

In early 2011, HBO aired a 5 part miniseries called Mildred Pierce. I did not see it when it first came out, but I had heard such great reviews that knew I needed to. When I finally did see it I found myself loving it instantly. Mildred Pierce is based on the 1941 novel by James M. Cain and stars Kate Winslet, Guy Pierce, Evan Rachel Wood, and Melissa Leo. It's about a self sacrificing mother (Winslet) during the Great Depression who finds herself suddenly separated from her husband, coping with the death of a child, opening up her own restaurant, falling in love with another man (Pierce) and to top it off constantly trying to handle her spoiled and narcissistic eldest daughter, Veda (Wood). Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood are amazing in the role of mother and daughter in this series and Guy Pierce is wonderful as well. On top of the cast being perfect the cinematography and costumes are also what make this series so great and absolutely beautiful! So take a look at some pictures from the miniseries.

Beautiful, right!? If you haven't seen this miniseries than I suggest you do. You will not be disappointed and I'm pretty sure you'll love it as much as I do. I'm actually in the middle of watching it for a second time and I'm actually thinking about picking up a copy of the actual novel! So have you seen it already? And, if so, did you like it? xoxo, Kayleigh

Period Film is a regular feature that I do every so often where I share with you my favorite period films and usually mention the beautiful attire/costumes worn in the film(s).

Artsy Tuesday - Chasing the Crayon

I introduce to you Tracey from Chasing the Crayon on Etsy. She is a freelance illustrator, living and working on the border of England and Wales. Tracey began as a self taught painter and later completed her degree from Hereford College of Arts, while there having the illustrator Matthew Richardson as a tutor. Tracey says, 'My visual interests are character led, narrative images. I work mainly in pencil and watercolour with a dash of collage. I find this approach suits the way I work and the mood I want to create.' Her inspration comes from words, stories, poems, and tall tales.

I absolutely adore Tracey's quirky and whimsical work. I came across it while browsing Etsy for owl art and boy, am I ever glad I did! I also recently read an interview she did over on the blog, Pikaland and and the interviewer stated that Tracey's work reminded her of Alice in Wonderland and I couldn't agree with her more. Tracey's work is so beautiful and you can tell that she is one super talented woman. I'm surprised she hasn't illustrated a ton of children's books because her work in my opinion is that wonderful. So take a look at some of my favorites from her shop.

So what do you think? Amazing, right? I think my absolute favorite is her Bear and Woodland Creatures Art Print. Beautiful! Tracey also has a great blog worth checking out and again you can check out the interview she did on Pikaland. Its pretty great and she gives a little sneak peek of her studio. So after visiting her shop, which piece is your favorite? Do tell! xoxo, Kayleigh

The Last Few Weeks

Hoooey! I don't know about you all, but the last few weeks for me have been super busy. We've been hitting up local festivals and street fairs, Christmas shopping, putting up Christmas decorations, tackling small projects that we've been meaning to get done for awhile now, enjoying Thanksgiving with family, running much needed errands, going to dentist and doctor's appointments, and doing more and more Christmas shopping. I am beyond pooped. And, no I did not attend Black Friday this year. No thanks to that at all!! I don't do well with enormous crowds of people so that was totally out of the question and plus I don't really find that they do that great of deals anymore anyways. I always wait for cyber Monday and browse the online shopping world from the comfort and warmth of my home. Much better don't you think!? Well I do anyway.

And, for those of you interested in a knee update, I had an MRI done on the 12th of November which came back fine, but their is still an issue with my knee cap being slightly to the side which is probably a big cause of my pain. The doc wanted to give me one more cortisone shot just to be certain we've tried everything before talking about a scope and/or surgery {not that I think another shot will do anything except prolong the inevitable and give me some relief for the holidays}. It kind of makes me quiver thinking about it probably because I have never in my life had a scope or surgery done. I go back to see the doc on the 6th of December and if the pain is still there {which at this point it slightly still is, or even if it goes away for another couple of months like in July and then all of a sudden comes back} then the next step is either a scope or surgery. I guess its inevitable at this point and I only hope for the best. I am also hoping if I do have to get anything drastic done like actual surgery that it can wait until after the holidays. Knee surgery during the holidays would equal no good!

So enough talk about my knee here are some pictures from the past few weeks.

We went to a local art festival a few weeks ago and I came across this fun sasquatch figure!? I guess that's what its supposed to be. It was in front of this old general store on the festical route in an old downtown building. It screamed take a picture of me!

Inside the general store was a secret passageway to a museum like room where they had a whole bunch of cool stuff. I assume most of it was what they sold at one time at the hardware store over the years. This huge rusted pot was amazing.

Ian loved this Dixie Beer sign, I of course, loved the beautiful stoneware crocks. Too bad none of it was for sale!

This was a small stagecoach I assume for children. It was so cute.

Again, Ian loved all the signs and you can even see the secret passageway door that leads to the hardware store in this picture.

I snatched this beauty {the owl} up from Pottery Barn through their fall sale. He was only $17, but had been around $80 at one point. I was excited and he's a fun piece that can and will stay up all year round.

They just love being under the tree when its lit up at night.

My beautiful mom cooking on Thanksgiving. She is an amazing cook and always makes the best Thanksgiving dinner!

My mom picked up a few bowls and such in this pretty pattern from Tuesday Morning. They were perfect for Thanksgiving and absolutely beautiful. I loved this pheasant.

I love this piece that my mom has hanging in her dining room. If she doesn't watch out I may take it when she's not looking!!

A delicious salad my mom had me make while she was cooking other things. It has bok choy in it and raw ramen. I was skeptical about it at first, but it turned out to be so yummy I asked for the recipe. Stay tuned I may share it soon!

I made some simple glitter paper garland to string around the house.

We made our first fire of the season this past weekend. It was so nice.

A sneak peek of my Christmas decorations.

Took crazy pictures of our tree over the weekend while sitting by the fire. It was fun.

Lily perched on her awful looking and torn up scratching post. They will be getting a new one for Christmas this year. This one has lasted almost 4 years though between the three of them so thats pretty good. In case your wondering its the SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post and they truly are the best ever and so durable.

Lily was very photogenic this weekend. I was suprised, but she does look so cute!

It makes me exhausted just looking at all of these! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! What did yo u do!? Travel anywhere? Did you do Black Friday this year or did you wait like me for the Cyber Monday deals? FYI - Amazon is having a HUGE dvd sale that started yesterday in case anyone's interested. Movies, I find, are always good for gift giving. I even saw a few I've featured on here in my Period Film series at super awesome prices so if your interested you better snatch them up quick! Also, Anthropologie is having free shipping on everything with no minimum purchase today which is pretty good considering they NEVER offer free shipping like that! Happy shopping! xo, Kayleigh

PS. I moved all of my pages to my sidebar in case you're wondering where they went. I'm going to be trying it out for awhile to see how it goes.
